Freedom of association in danger

MPs initiated in Parliament yet another piece of legislation to eliminate inconvenient NGOs.  This is done in truly discretionary fashion by a trick: they picked some frequent NGO names (“institute”, “agency”, “Romanian”) for alleged confusions with public bodies.  This is yet again against EU principles as a threat to the freedom of association, and follows best practices copied from well-established democracies like Russia or Ukraine.  Ponta’s government should not be surprised if Romania’s democracy ratings granted by various international organizations simply plummet, despite efforts of USL to sweeten realities.

Read the public statement of the 19 NGOs that are protesting against this new threat to democracy.
