Year 2014 is an electoral one. On 25th of May elections are to be held for the European Parliament and partial elections in some uninominal circumscriptions, and in November presidential elections. Against this background, there is the temptation for some candidates to adopt popular themes, aimed against fundamental rights, ranging from stigmatizing social groups to inciting to hate and violence. The civil society, through the organizations that signed the petition, makes an appeal to all political parties or independent candidates to avoid resorting to populism. In the context of the electoral campaign for the European Parliament of 2014, we urge all political parties and independent candidates to pledge:
- To refrain from using in the electoral discourse and during the campaign materials, messages, declarations and images that incite to hate and discrimination on grounds of race, color, nationality, ethnicity, affiliation to a certain social group, religious beliefs, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other differentiation criteria.
- To use a language that promotes social inclusion, to avoid discrimination and stigmatization of some persons by the criteria mentioned at the previous point.
- To respect people’s dignity within electoral communication, regardless of race, color, nationality, ethnicity, affiliation to a certain social group, religious beliefs, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other differentiation criteria.
- To refrain from using in the electoral discourse and during the campaign materials messages, declarations or images that would induce people from different minority groups a mutual feeling of distrust and hostility.
- To adopt disciplinary measures consistent with their own statutes, against candidates or party members that violate provisions listed at points 1-4, and also considering Charter of European Political Parties for a Non-Racist Society that establishes best practices in the electoral campaign and formulating public discourse.
We ask that this commitment be made not only by the candidates, but by all leaders and members of the party, by volunteers or hired personnel involved in the campaign. We ask the political parties and independent candidates to fill and sign the following engagement (using THIS form) and to publish it on the official campaign page.
The parties and candidates that sign the engagement „Campaign without discrimination” are asked to notify us of this.
